How to choose
Shin guards are not optional
Defenders make the most tackles, so shin guards matter most here. Guards with an ankle sock protect the bone that gets kicked most.
Pick a stable boot
Look for a tough toe for clearances and a wide sole that keeps you balanced when you turn and tackle.
Match the stud to the ground
Firm ground (FG) studs are best for normal grass. On artificial turf, pick a multi-ground or turf sole for grip and safety.
Light guards for speed
At Pro level, carbon-fibre guards give strong protection at a very low weight, so you stay quick.
Questions players and parents ask
What boots are best for defenders?
Defenders do best in boots with a tough, scuff-proof toe and a wide, stable sole. Firm ground studs suit most grass pitches in New Zealand winter and spring.
Do defenders need ankle protection?
It is a good idea. Shin guards with an ankle sock protect the ankle bones in tackles. Many juniors start with slip-in guards and move to ankle guards at club level.
How do I pick the shin guard size?
Go by height: under 140 cm is size S, 140 to 165 cm is M, over 165 cm is L. The guard should cover from just above the ankle to below the knee.
