How to choose
Gloves come first
Keeper gloves do the most work. Thicker latex grips better but wears faster. Juniors do well with 2.5 mm latex. Club keepers usually want 3 mm. Pro keepers use 4 mm contact latex for wet and dry days.
Get the glove size right
Measure from your wrist crease to the tip of your middle finger. A 15 cm hand is a size 6. Too big and the ball slips. Too small and the gloves tear.
Protect your elbows
A long-sleeve keeper jersey with padded elbows makes diving on hard ground less painful. It also tells everyone you are the keeper.
Boots for quick pushes
Keepers move sideways a lot. Pick boots with good grip under the front of your foot so you can spring across the goal.
Questions players and parents ask
What gear does a goalkeeper need?
A goalkeeper needs keeper gloves, a keeper jersey in a different colour from the team, shorts, socks, shin guards and boots with good grip. Padded elbows on the jersey help with diving.
What size goalkeeper gloves does my child need?
Measure from the wrist crease to the tip of the middle finger. 13 cm is size 4, 14 cm is size 5, 15 cm is size 6 and 16 cm is size 7. Check the full table in our size guide.
How do I make keeper gloves last longer?
Wet the palms before you play, rinse them in cool water after the game and let them dry slowly away from heaters. Keep a cheaper pair for training and a better pair for matches.
